I have been in this industry for a while and have seen an increasing number of people using the terms web design and web development interchangeably. However, they both do not mean the same thing. Web Design is the look and feel of your website, and Web Development is the functionality and usability of your website. Let us explore the differences between the two.

Web Design
Web Design includes the look & feel and the content on your website. The graphics, color scheme, navigation buttons, information on company, products and services provided. The overall appearance of your website and the graphics, multimedia effects used on the website contributes twoards the look and feel of your website design.

The information that you put under about company, products & services and various other pages can be classified into content. If you put other articles related to your company, products, services or industry can be also counted as content.

This both factors Look & Feel and Content constitute the Web Design, which is of utmost importance for any website owner as that is the first which a web visitor will see on your website and most probably that is the only thing that will make or break your web design venture. This constitutes the functionality and usability of your website. What functions does your website perform ? How much usable it is to a user ? What functions does your website design perform for you?

Functionality means the thing your website does for you. If you have a simple website design with static pages than your website is not a functional one. But if your website perfoms some fucntions for you like, taking the emaill addresses of visitors from them and stores it in a database than it can be called a functional website.

A website can perform a large array of functions, some of them are like, processing forms, connecting to the database, sending mailers etc.

Usability means how useful your website is to your website visitor. Is your website design east to use and follow? Is the navigation clear to follow? Is there a search function on your website? Does the website load quickly? Do all the functions of your website design work properly as intended? The basic idea is to give a good experience to website visitors.
